Independent cultural centre within a conflicting area in the Historic Centre that avoids gentrification and works on the recovery of the neighborhood.
Centre for the People is an independent cultural centre located in an old building currently shared with a tenant housing, within a conflicting low-income neighborhood of the Historic Centre. It runs different programs: art workshops; cinema, theatre, dance performances and exhibitions; a program of artistic residences and cultural networking. All the programs and workshops are cost free. It has a program for the restoration of its premises and it also focuses on the intervention and recovery of the neighborhood. One of their most important goals is to involve the neighbors, artists and collectives who attend the centre as an active part of the projects they undertake. They believe that the social and cultural work that strengthens the sense of belonging, the identity and the responsibility of citizens is a fundamental part of the renewal of the Historic Centre. It avoids gentrification and enhances people to value their urban context.
