fore/sight – Strategies for Tomorrow’s Society
A conference of the Alfred Herrhausen Society in Weimar
200 international opinion makers from politics, business, culture, the media and research were invited by Dr. Josef Ackermann, Chairman of the Management Board and the Board of Trustees of the Alfred Herrhausen Society, to meet together in Weimar to discuss the future of Germany.
Those in their forties were given a special opportunity to present their visions of Germany in twenty years’ time. These are the people who are increasingly taking over responsibility in the media, the economy and politics. The questions covered included: “Will a generational change lead to a revised outlook on the future?” and “What makes this different from the outlook of those who are now in their sixties?” Points of orientation that ensure cohesion in our society and new forms of politics were also presented.
Management board members of German companies discussed what legitimizes global companies in Germany, while intentionally bringing the discussion away from the ongoing economic patriotism debate in Germany and talking about issues with relevance for the future.
The power of images was the central topic of another panel discussion. Pictures have become a universal language and influence our perceptions and hopes.

The conference was prepared by three preceding conferences, and their results were integrated into the program. The conference was structured in such a way that all of the participants were able to actively participate in the discussions. The Alfred Herrhausen Society’s scientific advisors were the Center for Applied Policy Research and Triad Projektgesellschaft mbH, Berlin. The Welt am Sonntag and Deutschlandradio Kultur reported on the topic, with pre- and post-conference coverage of the event.
