Cities are political programmes made visible. They are mirrors of society and systems of governance of the country in which they are located. Successful cities demonstrate the viability of social systems. Centuries ago, cities believed they could protect themselves against problems with walls. Today people try to protect themselves against unresolved problems trough gated communities within cities.

Since 2005, the London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society- together with mayors, city planners, state governments, architects, scientists, community groups and committed local people- have studied growing, and in some cases shrinking, cities of the twenty-first century. The result was an international ‘think-and-do tank’, linking people across continents and political systems, ready to learn from and with each to find better solutions for cities of the future. In recognition of the value of this work, Deutsche Bank decided to fund a new research centre at the London School of Economics in 2010, which is now in full operation under the banner LSE Cities.

After „The Endless City“ the book „Living in the Endless City“ is a summing-up of the results of this cooperation, as well as of the Urban Age project and Deutsche Bank’s Urban Age Award. “Living in the Endless City” gives an insight into problems cities in the twenty-first century have to deal with.

In June, the Alfred Herrhausen Society -together with Phaidon and LSE Cities- presented the book in London and Berlin. On this occasion Professor of Urban Studies, Richard Burdett, and Professor of Sociology, Saskia Sassen as well as Professor Richard Sennett (all contributors to the book) have spoken about  “Living in the Endless City”.
