The Governability and Future of Cites 13.–14. Februar 2004 in Barcelona

The significance of the modern metropolis as a microcosm and important indicator of overall social development was something the Alfred Herrhausen Society for International Dialogue recognized early on. Within the framework of its annual topic for 2004, it tackled this issue by organising a conference of the mayors of Europe’s largest cities in cooperation with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and AULA Barcelona.

The mayors met leading cities experts at the second European Mayors’ Conference held in Barcelona on February 13 and 14 2004. Under the title, “New social patterns and policies: social cohesion, migration and urban governance”, they discussed the challenges currently facing urban conurbations in Europe – and together sought exemplary solution processes.

The main topics focussed on by the international conference were:

Social and demographic change
Migration
Governability of modern metropolises
Population structure and density
Architecture and cityscape
Redevelopment and use of public spaces
Regeneration of towns and cities
Opposition of city and state
Significance of cities in Europe

The conference is a part of the Cities Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and as regards content, carries on from the first European Mayors’ Conference held in London in February 2003.
