Just a few more weeks to go! On 22 September, our conference Bound to change: where are we heading? will be taking place in Deutsche Bank’s Quartier Zukunft in Berlin. We’re bringing together established experts and progressive new voices from business, politics, academia and civil society to discuss the transformations that will be necessary in the years ahead and ways in which we can steer the course of future change.
Crises ranging from climate change and the pandemic to war and inflation are forcing us to rethink and redefine our notions of progress, freedom and prosperity. How must our society and economy adapt in the face of these changes? What kinds of economic policy interventions are needed in these contradictory times? Why is the transition to a zero-carbon economy and society an opportunity to make Europe stronger and more independent over the long term? And how can our society meet social needs while responsibly paving the way for a sustainable future?

We’ll be exploring these and other questions at our conference. The programme includes a panel discussion on foreign policy and the economy with CDU politician Dr Norbert Röttgen, member of the Bundestag and former chair of its Foreign Affairs Committee, Dr Kira Vinke, head of the German Council on Foreign Relations’ Center for Climate and Foreign Policy, and Dr Janka Oertel, director of the European Council on Foreign Relations’ Asia programme. On the domestic policy panel, chaired by ZDF presenter Dunja Hayali, democracy expert Paulina Fröhlich (head of Das Progressive Zentrum’s Resilient Democracy programme), economist Philippa Sigl-Glöckner, the Federal Commissioner for Social Innovation Zarah Bruhn (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and Dr Wolf Heinrich Reuter (Director for Economic and fiscal policy strategy at the Federal Ministry of Finance) will be discussing the economic and social challenges facing Germany and their implications for democracy.
There will also be thought-provoking ideas and input from Navid Kermani (German–Iranian author and academic), Christian Sewing (CEO of Deutsche Bank AG), Prof. Biao Xiang (head of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology) and Marilena Berends (journalist).
The conference will be held in German with simultaneous interpreting into English, and will also be streamed in full in both languages.
